Customise product variations

Variable products (the same item in several colours or sizes) usually share a single design, and most of the time that’s exactly what you want. But sometimes a variation genuinely needs to look different: a dark print won’t show on a black shirt, the kids’ size needs a smaller logo. Sigmira handles this with an override model: every variation follows the parent until you deliberately give one its own design, so you customise only what truly differs and leave everything else on autopilot. This guide shows how that works and when to reach for it.

How variations work in Sigmira

A variable product has one design setup that all its variations share. That’s usually what you want: design the front print once, and it applies to every size and colour.

When a specific variation needs to look different, you create an override for it. An override is a full snapshot of that variation’s design; from then on, it’s independent of the parent. Variations you never override simply keep using the parent design, so there’s nothing to maintain.

If you only need a different product photo per colour, you don’t even need an override: the variation’s own WooCommerce image is used as its mockup automatically.

Switch between variations

In the product editor, a row of variation pills (swatches) sits above the canvas. Click one to view that variation’s current design. A pill with a small dot has its own override (its title reads — customized).

Override a variation

  1. Select the variation’s pill.
  2. Click Override [name] (for example Override Blue) to start customising just that variation. It begins as a copy of the parent design.
  3. Make your changes: view backgrounds, layers, print areas, anything in the design.
  4. Click Done editing [name] when finished.

Save with Save Override (just this variation) or Save All (the whole product).

Reset a variation

To drop an override and go back to the parent design, select the variation and click Reset (Remove the [name] override and use the parent default). This takes effect immediately.

What customers see

When a customer picks a variation on the product page, the editor loads that variation’s design: its override if it has one, otherwise the parent. Their own text and uploads carry across as they switch, so they don’t lose work.
