Set up pricing rules

Personalisation is worth paying for. Pricing rules are how you charge for it without anyone feeling nickel-and-dimed at checkout. A name on a mug might be free while a full photo wrap isn’t; every extra line of engraving might add a little; a setup fee might apply only to small runs. Whatever your logic, you encode it once here and the right fee appears automatically as the customer designs, landing on the cart as a clear line item. Set it and it runs on every order. This guide takes you from a simple flat fee all the way to tiered, conditional pricing.

Add a rule

  1. Open Pricing Rules and click + Add Rule.
  2. Choose a rule type (see below). The type decides what the fee is based on, and can’t be changed after the rule is created.
  3. Fill in the rest of the form and save.

Rule types

Pick the one that matches how you want to charge:

Type Charges based on…
Text length how many characters are in a single text element
Total text length the total characters across every text element
Text lines how many lines of text are present
Number of elements the count of elements on the design
Price per element a flat fee per element of the chosen kind
Unique text colors how many distinct text colours appear
Element size the printed area of the matching elements
Design size the total printed area of the design
Print area size the print area the customer chose

The rule form

Depending on the type, you’ll see these sections:

Rule settings

  • Label — a name for the rule (up to 120 characters), for your reference.
  • Elements — which elements the rule counts: All elements, Text only, or Images only (shown for the types where it’s relevant).

Conditions
Add one or more thresholds with + Add Condition. Each reads like a sentence (the measured value is greater than / is at least / is less than / is at most / is equal to / is between a number) and sets the Price for that tier (in € or %). This is how you build tiered pricing, e.g. first 10 characters free, then €0.10 each.

Charge options

  • Charge typePer quantity (the fee multiplies by how many items they order) or One-time setup (charged once per design).
  • Price typeFixed (€) for a money amount, or Percentage (%) of the product price.
  • Match modeFirst match (only the first matching tier applies) or Sum all (every matching tier adds up).

Applies to

  • ProductAll products, or pick one. (All products applies to every customizable product.)
  • Print methodAll print methods, or a specific print method.

Use the Pick a product / Pick a print method window to scope the rule. If you haven’t set one up yet, you’ll see a shortcut like Add a customizable product ↗.

Advanced

  • Priority (0–1000) — the order this rule is considered in, relative to others.

A worked example

To charge €0.15 per engraved character after the first 20:

  1. + Add RuleText length (or Total text length for all text combined).
  2. Conditions: value is greater than 20Price 0.15.
  3. Charge options: Price type = Fixed (€), Charge type = Per quantity, Match mode = Sum all.
  4. Applies to: the engraved product (or All products).
